Installing WordPress, Locally & at Your Host

We'll go through a local install of WordPress using MAMP, which will help folks create a development environment on their local PC or Mac. We will also do a "Famous 5-minute Install" to a live host (create database and FTP files). We'll briefly discuss one-click installs and why a 5-minute install is preferred over one-click installs offered by certain hosts.

Cost to attend this event is $5, to be collected at the event.

Any word on the location for this meetup? I might not be able to attend due to the time I get off work.

No verified location yet. If anyone knows of a free location with wireless and a projector, please let me know. Making some calls today - hoping for gurnee, lake villa, or Antioch.

I'm verifying a few final details with the owner, but Grass Lake Landing in Antioch will be our likely location for this week. There will be food and drink available for purchase. Hopefully this will be a good ongoing spot for us! Thanks to Linda Ryder for the solid lead!!!

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it, but please let me know if this location works well. LKPUG is looking for a good venue for future meetings.

Hi all - I'm checking to see what would be more helpful for folks. Would you rather do this topic, or one where we explore the WordPress dashboard, it's contents, and what all is possible? I'm thinking the latter lends itself better to a diverse crowd of beginning developers and all users, where only developers will probably care about doing a local install to MAMP. Let me know your thoughts...thanks!

    Hi Heather.

Would it make sense to do a super-short (highly regulated 20 min) MAMP demo and then move into the dashboard? And then if a few/bunch of people would like to learn/know more about MAMP then there could be a shortened offshoot meeting for that group?

    Just thinking out loud...

I could go either way. I've never used MAMP and only installed WP before manually using the guides I found on the web. That suggestion by Caroline, seems like a good compromise...Also, I just realized that MAMP is for a MAC install. I am more a Windows/Linux user, so I think it might not be as interesting unless the process and wrinkles are similar to XAMPP or WAMP. I guess. Your call Heather...I will come for either plan or a combination of both.

Nick, good point. And yes, MAMP is very similar to WAMP. I too 99% of the time use Windows. Maybe that should be the poll question here to make the decision.

What platform do you design/develop on? Windows or Mac? Please chime in.
Thanks everyone! Sorry for hijacking your poll Heather :P Just trying to help!

    Caroline: Windows

Thank you, Caroline and Nick. I think I will do the hybrid. Kim Schroeder is coming prepared to do a WAMP install to, for PC users, so we should be covered. Thanks do much for your input and see you tomorrow!

I enjoyed sharing with everyone and love the engagement in this group. Everyone is willing to share knowledge and collaborate. Hopefully this topic got people's feet wet in creating a development environment and working within a new WordPress install. We'll get even further into it all next month!

The presentations by both Kim and Heather were instructive and to the point. The group overall was polite and welcoming. The overall experience was enjoyable. :)
